GSB Parkour Park Funding Update

Garfield Super Block is an important multi-cultural gathering space in Central District and the hopeful location of Seattle’s first parkour park.

In September, we asked you to email the Seattle city council and urge them to fund the $7.7 million redevelopment of Garfield Super Block. Several PKV staff and community members participated in the call-to-action, plus many others who support the GSB project.

Your efforts were successful! GSB was included in the budget, though it’s not yet fully funded. As the GSB Coalition wrote in their announcement:

“Because of your emails and advocacy, the city council included the Garfield Super Block in the latest Metropolitan Parks District budget as part of the Equity Park Development Fund! While the final grant amount has yet to be determined, these dollars add a substantial amount to the construction funding, and will fund our Coalition capacity needs for the next year or so.”

The GSB Coalition continues to seek the remaining funding they need for the project.

In the meantime, design has begun!

Colin MacDonald, PKV’s design director, has been contracted by Site Workshop, the project’s architects, to design the parkour park. The final location of the park will be the northwest corner of the ball field, across from the community center (see map).

Colin is hard at work designing the park with community input. In a future post, we’ll share some drafts of Colin’s design!

You can see in the image the estimated cost is up to $200,000. PKV will be applying for grants to fund the park. But it’s a huge sum! So if you have a wealthy friend who wants to help make this park happen, let us know! (Seriously, have them email garrett@parkourvisions.org.)

Construction should start within the next 18 months. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as things progress.
